About Me

Hi, I'm John.

Psychology has been my passion for nearly 30 years. The first book I read on the subject was ‘The Road Less Travelled’ by M Scott Peck in 1994. I have been gripped ever since. As well as a full honours degree in Applied Psychology (BSc) which I began in Durham University in 1999 I also hold a postgraduate CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Integrative Therapeutic Counselling and a foundational qualification in the Pesso Boyden System of Psychotherapy.

Being a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) means my work adheres to the BACP ethical framework. Part of my counselling training included a years placement with Place2be giving me significant experience in working with young children.15 years of my career have been spent working closely with clients who have physical disabilities, learning disabilities and learning difficulties.

My professional development is ongoing, I am currently working towards accreditation in the Pesso Boyden System of Psychotherapy. My current proffessional interests include body psychotherapy, Jungian analysis and methods of recovery from addictive cycles of behaviour. My personal experience in psychotherapy is a significant factor in my ongoing enthusiasm for my work. A personal interest in emotional well being, spiritual growth and psychological development continues to be a passion as a result of this I have invested many years as a client in various psychotherapeutic disciplines and meditative practices. I also dedicate a significant amount of my time to a deeper appreciation of theology, philosophy and the creative arts.

I am always keen to offer insights into the process of therapy. I am happy to signpost and I welcome new enquiries.

My therapeutic approach is integrative, focusing on exploring client relationships with people, places, and things. Current relationships may seem like obstacles, yet they mirror emotional patterns from our past. I firmly believe upbringing profoundly shapes our personalities. While we can't alter our past relationships, understanding them better helps recognize their influence on our present lives.

I consistently view my work as illuminating the figurative room within our lives. In this room, we find various furniture symbolizing significant life events. Deepening self-awareness is like brightening the room. As this occurs, we no longer need to consciously navigate around the furniture; instead, we instinctively avoid it.

I prioritize the quality of the client-therapist relationship. Renowned psychotherapist Irvin Yalom suggested, "It's the relationship that heals," and the relational model influenced my training. This approach profoundly shapes my practice. Ultimately, the connection between client and therapist is the one relationship the therapist observes firsthand.
